Hot Summer, Cool Imagery
Summer in Japan as seen in the popular imagery of Ukiyo-e is characterized by lush garden scenes; fashionable women in sheer fabrics; languid walks in cool evening breezes; boat rides and firework viewing on the Sumidagawa, and perhaps a chilling ghost story to raise goosebumps before heading for bed long after dark. Our summer exhibition features works depicting summertime Japanese life in Edo through Taisho-Showa period.
