In June of 1560, Oda Nobunaga defeats the army of Imagawa Yoshimoto in a driving rainstorm. Imagawa's troops outnumbered the Oda army 12 to 1. Oda instead of retreating, he used the rainstorm to his advantage and attacked, achieving an important decisive victory. This important victory was the start of his desire to unite Japan and end the civil wars. In 1562, he allied himself Ieyasu Tokugawa, who eventually did unite Japan and end the civil wars, becoming Shogun and beginning the Tokugawa Era in 1603.
